Hersh she

Sometimes you just want chocolate.

This month’s donut

At Tim Horton’s this month the donut du jour seems to be more candy than usual.
It’s covered with candy sprinkles that are more candy like than regular sprinkles. Add to that the jam and icing and pretty much more candy than donut.

Strange ‘Runts’ box

So I got a box of Runts the other day I took a look at the packaging and I have to say it’s a little strange. The orange roller blading in the middle of nowhere is really the least strange of all; I mean I guess it’s supposed to have a slightly surreal look to it.

I’m ok with a banana and strawberry sharing a ride on a surfboard, but what’s with the foamy palm tree.
This is truly the part I don’t understand. Why is the pineapple skateboarding underwater, or how does the red round thing (cherry maybe) have the ability to fly when he wears snorkel gear? This box just isn’t right.

I just sneezed, and it’s update day.

I was out in the country for most of the weekend and now I’m paying the price. I have allergies and I often find that the day I come back I sneeze a whole lot. The good news is I had a fun time and I also got home in time to update. I guess the fun time really doesn’t affect you at all but the update does. This week’s update was a huge disappointment, and although they say if you have nothing good to say don’t say anything at all, I’m a candy reviewer it’s my job.

Taffy day

I can’t say why, but I just have a craving for salt water taffy.

Ice Cream Science

On a recent trip to Montreal I got to try out this ice cream known as Flavour Burst. Basically it’s an ice cream machine with all these hose attached and when they dispense the ice cream into the cone it has these crazy coloured lines around it. It looks really cool but taste decidedly average.

Chocolate restaurants.

Now I’m not sure if this is just something that’s happened around me but as of late I’ve not been able to find that many chocolate themed restaurants. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago many opening up all over the place. These restaurants would often specialize in fondue but also have other chocolate treats to enjoy. Some would have light regular food as well, so you’re not too full to have desert. They’d also often have a really good tea and fine drink selection. So have I moved away from this kind of awesome phenomenon or are they going out of business?

Chocolate Nectar

Recently Allison received a cool little sample of a health type drink with some health type bars she ordered online.
I figured since it had a picture of chocolates on it that it was worthy of mention on Candy Critic.
Allison stirred the pack with the milk.
And stirred and stirred.
I took a sip and wasn’t too impressed. Could be because I’m a chocolate snob.
Allison on the other hand loved it and said it reminded her of those Carnation Instant Breakfasts.

Update your fashion, update your look, we’ll update reviews.

Well it’s kind of late right now, I need a shower more than you can imagine. That doesn’t stop me from making sure that update day isn’t pushed forward. This weeks review was pretty cool too. Something different and not bad tasting, the kind of review that puts a smile on your face.

Stuff from Emily’s

This isn’t the first time they’ve sent stuff and if we’re lucky here at Candy Critic it won’t be the last.
We got a selection of their new chocolate covered fruit things and I for one am looking forward to sampling the strawberry pack.
They also (with a small hint from me) sent us a box of their chocolate covered fortune cookies. I just finished the review and I’m telling you right now that it’s not going to be negative.

The folks at Hershey have something to say!

"The Hershey Company announced today that it is celebrating the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight with Special Edition Batman-themed products. Special Edition Reese’s® Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Bats and Reese’s® Dark Peanut Butter Bats feature a unique bat shape to mark the debut of the highly anticipated new Batman feature, arriving in theaters July 18. Reese’s® Pieces® Candies are getting in on the fun by masking themselves in a Batman-themed black and blue color scheme, and Kit Kat® Dark Knight Bars feature an imprinted Bat-Signal on standard and king size bars. The Special Edition Batman products hit store shelves this month.

Hershey’s The Dark Knight collection also invites consumers to “Find the Bat-Signal and Win” with an exciting instant-win promotion. One lucky grand-prize winner will receive the ultimate Batman accessory – a customized, Batman-themed, hand built MV Agusta F4 motorcycle valued at $35,000. Specially marked packages feature instant-win game pieces and the chance to win a variety of The Dark Knight-themed prizes, including ten official Joker Henchman Masks and five home theater systems, each including a widescreen television, speakers and audio components.

For an inside look at Hershey’s “Find the Bat-Signal and Win” promotion prizes and The Dark Knight movie trailers, fans can visit www.reeses.com/darkknight. Reese’s and Batman fans are invited to upload videos showcasing their favorite way to enjoy Hershey’s The Dark Knight collection, helping The Joker on his quest to make the Reese’s bat-shaped candy disappear.

“By partnering with one of the season’s hottest entertainment properties, Hershey is delivering the excitement of a big-screen event movie through our iconic brands,” said Michele Buck, Senior Vice President, Global Chief Marketing Officer, The Hershey Company. “We are thrilled to partner with The Dark Knight and we are excited to bring this exciting promotion to our consumers.”

The Special Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Reese’s Pieces Candies and Kit Kat Wafer Bars featuring The Dark Knight are available now through December 2008, while supplies last, at mass, grocery, drug and convenience stores. Hershey’s “Find the Bat-Signal and Win” promotion runs through December 31, 2008. Official rules and additional details can be viewed at www.reeses.com/darkknight."
It’s a cool contest and all but I have one complaint about the new products offered.
Most of them aren’t dark chocolate. I mean it’s the “Dark” Knight and they didn’t capitalize on this.
They did use dark cups but it’s the only treat and since they’re already out on the marked I hardly think it was on purpose.

Gummy Bear Book

My friend Susan just sent/lent me this cool book all about gummy bears.

It’s a funny little history of the great snack as they participated in the most important parts of history. As well as giving tips and information about how gummy bears live.
This tortured gummy bear made Allison and me laugh pretty hard.

Give me cookie!

When people e-mail me and ask me if they could send me a cool treat they’ve found, or something they make really well I generally say no. My rule is simple, and reason even better, I’m pretty much terrified that some weirdo might try and kill me. I’m not saying you will but there are strange people out there in the candy world. Trust me I get e-mails regularly. Having said all that I do have to exceptions to the rule. If you’re a candy company and you want to send samples I’m all over that.
But I also accept gifts from friends. Particularly when they’re yummy cookies made by someone’s grandmother. I’ll even post a blog about it right here. Basically what I’m saying to my friends is “give me more homemade treat” oh yeah and thanks Candice and Alex.

Ok, it went from being a warm update day to being a really hot update day.

So I guess it’s appropriate that we review M&Ms considering their claims of not melting. I also like the fact that these have a minty flavour, because for some reason mint and cool go together. Although I’m not really sure why, considering mint is mainly used in tea, and tea is not cold at all.

Art in the park

Just a reminder that this weekend I’ll be selling my candy photos at Art in the Park in Ottawa. You can find the show in the Glebe and you can find me in the spot called “35 Petterson’s Creek Pathway”.

Hope to see you there.

In the can

The guy, no the genius that decided to put Pringles potato chips in a can has died. The greatest thing about this man wasn’t even that he changed the shape of potato chips; the greatest thing about this man is that he asked to be buried in an empty can of Pringles. One can only hope it was the original flavour.

How I spent Rocky Road Day

Today was national Rocky Road day and fortunately for me I recently picked up a Rocky Road Oh Henry.

It was also fortunate for them as well because I decided to enjoy this bar as a celebration of today rather than reviewing it.

A stormy update day.

I’ve just been told that some of the folks in the Midwest got caught up in some tornados. If you ask me that would be the perfect time to hunker down in my solid cement bunker and enjoy a sweet treat. I say this because if I live somewhere that tornados hit I would have to have a huge bunker full of candy because I’m basically a wimp. I’d probably need the same bunker if I happened to move somewhere that had any crime, threat of any kind of attack (killer bees included) or even an area with excessive pollen (my allergies hate it. Basically what I’m saying is hang in there, you’re braver than me and enjoy reading this weeks review.
