Update Da… Wait a minute.

Ok so it’s not really update day, it’s a couple of days after update day, but I was out of town. I was out of town searching for cool candy, and trust me I found a bunch. So much so in fact that my teeth are already starting to hurt. This weeks review actually came from a trip too; unfortunately it wasn’t me on it. However any time I get a treat out of someone’s fun trip out of town I’m at least a little less jealous.

Are you for real?

As you may or may not know I’m taking a class right now all about food science. It’s fascinating and strangely doesn’t scare me away from many foods; it actually makes me feel better about them. Last week we had a class on packaging, or what the rule are about labels and such.
While enjoying a bag of “cheddar snacks” I read this on the back of the bag. I’m not sure what it means, but I’m pretty sure that I won’t find any real cheese in the ingredient list.Wait a minute it’s there, so why use the words “real cheddar cheese taste”, it makes it sound like there’s no cheddar at all. Language is so confusing.

Sprinkled with Pride

On my stop over in Toronto I decided to hit Tim Horton's and I noticed that in Toronto they use just blue and white sprinkles on their vanilla dip donuts. I'm thinking it has something to do with Maple Leafs.

Best Worst Meal Ever

Just got back from a road trip through Toronto down to the US, where I ate like any good American should. I should mention that I'm Canadian so really I over did it a lot.The winner of the worst meal that I consumed on the whole trip had to be Cracker Barrel. I enjoyed their chicken and cheddar skillet. It's a layer of hash browns covered with chicken and broccoli, covered with that cheap cheese sauce they use in theatre nachos, covers with broken Ritz crackers, covered with more crapy cheese. It was wonderful and the only way that you can guarantee to break any diet that you might be on.

Wow this is cool

The folks at Tootsie are great people, and you may agree with me. Why do you ask? Well they just sent me a whole bunch of candy to take a look at, review, and maybe bathe in, but really that's personal. Best of all they've sent word that they will also send one of my lucky readers a bunch of treats too. All I have to do is pick one winner and a pack will be yours. Now I have to figure out how to give it away.

I've got it! Send me an idea for how I should give these away. Be it a contest idea, a silly stunt, I don't know. The best idea will get their address forwarded to the folks at Tootsie Roll and will get some really cool mail.

Just to let you know that the free candy from Tootsie contest is over. I'll announce the winner as soon as they fess up.

Pictures of your truly.

For those that missed the article about Candy Critic in the Charlatan a few weeks ago, you also missed some awesome pictures taken by Christopher King.
He managed to get some shots that really look great. It’s always strange to have someone shoot you for an article and I’m always paranoid that it’ll make me look silly. But Chris did a great job and made me look silly but in a good way.

Click here to check out some of Chris's other shots.

I might be late with the update…

And by late I mean I might miss update day entirely this week. I’m never sure what to do when I’m not around on Sunday, particularly when it’s like today and I’m out on an adventure. I may update when I get home, I may update tomorrow, I may just wait for next week and let the current candy get another week. On a side note today is the anniversary of the day of the invention of Coke, so maybe I’ll have a bottle to celebrate.

Frozen Eggs

My friend Susan suggested to me recently that I try Cadbury Mini Eggs frozen. I figured at first that they couldn’t really be much different frozen than not but Susan was adamant so I threw a bag in freezer.

I took them out after two days in the deep freeze. I smashed one with a hammer to both prove that they where frozen and because smashing things is kind of fun.

I tried then and they do taste pretty good. I can’t say that they’re better than just out of the bag, but the texture is different as well as being pleasant. If you’ve never tried them like this and you’re a fan it’s well worth it just for fun. (On a side note, what the heck is that in my teeth?)

This video is for tomorrow really.

Tomorrow is “Something Sticky Day” so I figured a video full of sticky candy might be just right.

TCHO Cacao Nibs

The folks at TCHO just sent me their latest newsletter touting their Cacao Nibs with an inspirational picture that made my mouth water. The idea of Cacao Nibs on ice cream sounds spectacular, now I have to try it.

Bullets and M&Ms

The Chive has a collection of photos of bullets going through things shot at high speed. I particularly liked this shot of a bullet going through a few peanut M&Ms.

Key Lime Donut

I have to give Tim Horton’s credit for their Donut of the month this month. It’s gutsy to say the least. They label it as Key Lime, but really there’s so much more going on in this donut that it frankly boggles my imagination.
So not only do you have they’re standard plain donut with a lime like flavoured cake (courage for not making it some kind of glazed treat). But then there’s some kind of frosting on top, my best guess would be vanilla.
The strange part comes after this. On top of the icing is some kind of cake crumb pressed oat granola type topping. I have to say that I like it. I find it strange with the key lime cake but I really like this donut. I don’t know if it’s something I’d get again and again, it could be that the main reason I like it is that it’s just so strange.

Chocolate covered Raisins

So many people hate these things and I can see why. I personally love them. I guess people don’t like that little bit of grit one finds in a raisin, also I can imagine that the squish might be a little strange. Either way today is National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day, so if you love them go get a bag, if you hate them… Well give them another try, and if you still hate them you’ll just have to live with yourself.

It's National Chip and Dip Day!!!

So my question to you is do you have any chips? My second question has something to do with things that one might lower their chips into. My third question has something to do with the economy, but it’s not really relevant to National Chip and Dip Day.

Update day, and it’s so spring like.

This week I reviewed a treat that Allison brought back for me from Russia. I love getting all kinds of treats from different places, even if they don’t taste great. I guess you can read on to find out how this treat did, but I’m sure by the way I’m describing this review you can probably guess yourself.

This week’s photo is a little tribute to Easter. I’m not sure how I feel about the holiday itself but I love the candy and I love the colours.

One of the signs that Easter is on its way.

Easter has always been one of those holidays that always sneak’s up on me, I think it has something to do with the actual day always changing. I’m not very good with dates as it is and if you make it a floating date forget about it.

One of the key things though that reminds me is the return of the beloved Easter Crème egg. I can’t describe what that stuff in the middle is, but it sure is tasty. I recently picked up a box of these wonderful little treats and I had a few questions that I wanted to know.
Like how do they keep the yolk separated, and who came up with the idea of these eggy treats. I also wanted to know why they only have them during Easter. Do they taste better fried, and if so how do you recommend I go about frying it? Basically I have a lot of silly questions, and I’m going to send them to the folks at Cadbury and see if they answer. I’ll keep you posted.

So beautiful and so sad

The chocolate bunny may be melted, but he went for the art, and that must be noble.

What was the name of the 70s show?..

You know the one about the California Highway Patrol?
CC

I tasted the one with the creepy baby on it.

Having just finished unpacking Allison presented me with a few little candy wrappers that apparently have examples of interesting Russian art on them.

This one is a famous painting by a famous painter that apparently didn’t actually paint the bears on the painting although that’s what this painting is known for. The chocolate from what I’m told wasn’t great.
This one is a painting of a creepy looking baby. The painting is well executed; the expression will probably keep me up for a few nights. I tasted this one and it’s ok.

Penguin Eggs?

Today while flipping through some online flyers I came across an interesting item on sale for Easter this year.
It’s chocolate eggs, sure that’s not strange, but apparently these are chocolate emperor penguin eggs. I know penguins are popular and everything since all those movies and stuff came out, but really, I think this might be stretching it a little too far.

New Doritos… How about you do all the work.

Doritos has a new flavour of corn chip and guess what flavour it is? No really guess.
Why should you guess, well maybe the folks at Doritos created a flavour that tastes ok, but just doesn’t really taste like anything.
Either way they’re offering a big cash prize if you can name the flavour and come up with an add campaign too.
I tried one out and it’s not too bad, a little spicy for my liking though. Maybe I’ll call it “The flavour that Chris doesn’t really like”. I could give them a whole add campaign where they could use me as their spokes person and I could just stand there and say that I don’t really like them, but maybe you will. I’m a genius.

It’s St Patrick’s Day!!!

As we all know St Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate the Irish and in particular St Patrick, a man synonymous with the great green isles. We also know that St Patrick’s Day is a day that people to a lot of drinking, and there is a complete obsession with the colour green.
Keeping this in mind I started to wonder. What is the best green treat that I can think of. Is it the McDonalds shamrock shake, green gummy mint leaves, or is there something better. If any of my experience eating candy means anything than I have one simple answer to this, it has to be the green mint Jelly Bean. It’s so tasty; it’s truly a classic, and best of all it’s not sour apple.

I can’t find anything new

I’m trying to find something really cool to review for Easter and frankly I’m completely out of luck so far.

I’m finding a lot of the same old thing, chocolate hollow treats with candy eyes or features fused on. Nothing that isn’t much different than the classic chocolate bunny, unless you happen to be a fan of High School Musical or something.

I did have a glimmer of hope today while looking but was disappointed when I found out that these where just for blowing bubbles.

Update Day begins now…

So it’s another update day and here I am stuck in front of the computer. I wouldn’t be that upset except for the fact that I have a ton of work to do and it’s absolutely spectacular outside. This is what you get for dedicating your life to writing and doing crazy online projects. Well this weeks review cheered me up a bit, tasty and expensive, I feel all high class and stuff.

Hey it’s National Chip Day!!!

I suggest that everybody goes out and buys a bag of plane chips and munch them down. The simplicity of such a fine flavour is often lost on most. The potato is a fine tasting vegetable, sure it’s not as exciting as a tomato or asparagus, but it’s pretty darn tasty.

Bunny makes out with peanut butter

Apparently when a bunny and jar of peanut butter make out they produce an egg. So much to learn about Easter love I say.

New photos for sale.

It’s official; over at bewarethecheese.com we’re now selling our large format photo canvases online. You could own your very own gigantic photo of some gummy bears to hang over your kitchen table, bed, or toilet. I won’t be offended where you hang it at all; in fact I think hanging art over a toilet is kind of classy.

Hey I’m a cover girl… guy.

The fine folks at the Charlatan at Carleton U not only wrote a great article about candy critic, not only took some cool pictures of me, but they also felt that I was worthy of a cover. I’m totally thrilled about the article and so honoured that they even wanted to do the article in the first place.

Well I finally had one

Last night I was in the Market here in Ottawa and the famous Obama cookie bakery was open.
I went up to the counter stood with pride and refused to call it an Obama cookie. I asked for a maple leaf cookie even though there were a bunch of signs and photos around it calling it an Obama cookie. I have no spine.

A note for the cafeteria workers at my school

You won’t find me lurking about the cooler anymore. A few weeks ago a was in the cafeteria and I came across this pudding treat that really intrigued me. I didn’t have the money or the time to pick it up so I decided to return a few days later. The treat had disappeared.
Today on my regular search for this elusive treat that I was now pretty sure was just a figment of my imagination I came across it again. I picked one up and all I can say is that I’m pretty disappointed. It’s probably not that bad, but it sure doesn’t live up to several weeks of searching.
