A game I saw

I was in a bookstore the other day and I came across this awesome looking board game all about treats. It’s called “Eat It” and it’s a trivia game all about junk food.

It’s about time someone made a game with people like me in mind.

Nerdy Candy Creations

Found a couple of interesting tech type projects made from candy and fun sweets. First of all a circuit board made completely out of all kinds of treats. There’s a few tips if you want to make one yourself.
Click here to check out this site.
Also if you like Pac Man, and I do, then this might be the perfect treat for you.

Sherry paints candy, I like candy.

This Friday my friend Sherry Garcia is having an opening for her show at the Canteen art shop and gallery (238 Dalhousie st).

The show is called “sticky sweet”, so you can imagine why I’m interested. Come on out if you’re in the Ottawa area.

Candy Causes

Click here to check out Surf Sweets Cause.

One of the things I rarely mention on this site is candy related cause. It’s not that I don’t find them to be important; it’s just that the site isn’t about global issues; it’s about tasty candy.

Click here to check out Pure Fun's Cause.

Many of the web sites that I’ve link on this blog are concerned about producing candy with a conscience and I figured I’d give them a little credit and a free link for doing that.

Click here to find out Divine's Cause.

In some cases these companies donate to other causes and in some cases their whole business is creating candy with conscience. I think all of these ideas are great, and more companies should be on board. The only thing that has to remain is that the treats still have to be fun and tasty.

I’m seeing double, right?

Today at Tim Hortons I came across an interesting anomaly. They had Honey donuts and Toffee donuts right next to each other. They look almost identical but do they taste different?
I had to find out, so I got one of each and munched away.

Both were equally stale, a new a common problem happening at Tim Hortons lately. The toffee donut had a little more of a burnt taste while the honey one was more sugary. The cake in the toffee donut was also a little denser while the honey one lighter.

Update Day… After the storm

So the storm that hit us was crazy, it knocked over all kinds of things, but most importantly for you candy fanatics is that it knocked over my cable internet connection. So that’s why I’m not updating till today. This weeks review shouldn’t cause any damage either, so you’re lucky, and so am I.

We had a busy weekend

A little storm came through and made our weekend really exciting. Unfortunately it cut off my Internet and I wasn’t able to update this weekend. I’ll get to it today I hope.
We’re all ok, and now we have a yard big enough to play football, too bad I’m too much of a cupcake to get tackled, and too uncoordinated to catch anything.

Not Chester Cheetah

Just in case you're wondering although these are cheezies and although this is a tiger the fellow on this bag is not Chester Cheetah. Most likely it is his not so charismatic cousin Earl.

Happy National Pretzel Day!

Has it been a year already? A year since I enjoyed a crunchy little salty treat? A year since I pondered weather or not to have a big one with mustard? A year since I used the same photo? Time flies… Good times friends, good times.

Randi’s helping

My friend Randi wanted to contribute to the blog, so here goes: “Tootsie Rolls used to be really friggin' good. Now they are not.” Thanks Randi!

We have a Winner!

For those that didn’t enter our Tootsie contest earlier you missed out because Mr Watson was lucky enough to get himself a prize pack from the fine folks at Tootsie. I asked people to tell me the best way to give the treats away and he not only decided to share it but also wanted to make sure that those who received it got a positive message about taking care of your teeth. Congrats sir and I hope your prize is yummy!

Freeze

Now that school is out, at least for me, all I can think about is eating summer treats. Anything frozen is my first choice.

Spring, as told by candy around me

One of the sure fire signs of spring here in Ottawa is when ice cream and treat shops start to open up in the Byward market. The Byward market is that place where Obama bought a cookie and where a whole lot of tourists come to visit. It’s a pretty cool place, and best of all you’re always sure to get a great treat, in particular beaver tails. If you ever find yourself in Ottawa in the summer, let me know and I’ll show you around.

Earth Day stuff

View Candy Critic in a larger map

Just to let everybody know, for Earth Day this year I updated the Candy Critic map. If you happen to know of something that might be missing please let me know. It’s a continues work in progress but I’m ok with it right now.

Hey it’s National Jellybean Day!

I like to suck ‘em. Yup, that’s how I roll when it comes to little jellied treats all covered with a hard candy shell. I’m a little strange, sure, but I just love the feeling of satisfaction when I get through a whole jellybean without taking a bite.

Jelly Belly Pudding

I’m not really sure what the definition of pudding is. I’ve tried many treats in the world that have been labelled as pudding and they’re all very different.
This stuff I’m not sure about. However I’m not sure what else one could call a red phlegmy like substance that taste a little like cherry cough syrup either.

Arm Candy Casa?

I don’t think this store sells any sweet treats at all. I’m pretty sure it’s either a club, or a place to buy purses. Just thought I’d give you warning.

Update day, it’s just that simple.

Normally I go all crazy on update day telling you about my life, and what’s going on. It’s often a time I can get away from the “candy world” and tell you more about the real me. However this week I got a Wii and I just want to play more tennis, so I’m going to cut this short. Enjoy this weeks review.

Why I will not review this cookie

Let me get one thing out in the open, it’s not because it’s a cookie. I’ve reviewed cookies in the past and I will review them in the future. Heck I might even review this brand of cookie in the future.
The reason I won’t review this cookie is because of the way I got it. I grabbed this cookie from a pile of treats being given out at a party. I’ve reviewed treats I’ve acquired at parties before but it often makes me feel a little dirty, like I should pay for all the stuff I review. The other reason, and the one that pretty much guarantees I won’t review it is when I got home the cookie was broken. I just can’t review a stolen broken cookie, it would just be wrong.

Food Science Exam today.

By the time you watch this video I will either be in my Food Science exam, or finished it. I’m not sure if this class has improved my love of candy or freaked me out even more.

What’s the best-looking chocolate you’ve ever seen?

I’ve seen so many chocolate that look so good. I don’t always mean good in the “I want to eat it” way either. Sometimes a chocolate looks like a piece of artwork and I almost don’t want to eat it. Sometimes I do and it’s great, sometimes it’s not, but most of the time if someone takes the time to turn a chocolate into a piece of art then it’s probably pretty tasty too.

Danielle suggests Marie Bell Chocolates in New York and they do look pretty amazing.

Click here to check out their site.

I recently tried Kohler Chocolates (check the review here) and they looked really cool too. But I want to know if you know of any other beautiful chocolates. Something so great that you don’t even want to take it out of the box. Let me know what you find and I’ll post any other finds in the future.

The bendy straw

It’s one of those inventions that had both form and function. Most people think of them as simply being that straw that a kid would get a restaurant to be entertained but really there’s so much more to these straws.

After all the drink box would not exist without the bendy straw. The fact that you need a straw that is longer than the box, but also fist neatly at the side of the box as well is an amazing math problem. Not to mention the role these straws play for the sick and elderly that can’t sit up very well to get drinks.
The bendy straw is a miracle of both science and the inventor should get a noble prize.

Why I probably won’t give you free candy.

I rarely mention this on the site but one of the most common questions I always get is do you have any candy? Implying that I might have candy to give to this nice person that’s taken the time to say hello. The answer is often no.
People get ticked off at this because as you can see from this site I often get a lot of candy delivered to my front door and I often don’t eat it all. Now I’m not holding out on you fine people at all, if I had candy I thought I could give you I would, and on the occasions that I do have the candy I give it out pretty freely.

So here is a list of reasons I probably don’t have any candy to give to you right now.
When I do a review and I have leftovers chances are it’s an open chocolate bar, a half eaten bag of chips, or some kind of treat with a bite taken out. Now if I gave you that would you be happy? If you would, let me know when you see me and I’ll see what I can do about setting you up with a half eaten treat.
Some treats are pretty yummy. Sometimes I eat a whole lot of a treat, and sometimes I even stash a little away for later because that treat is so good. I don’t think I’m a bad person for doing that, after all running this site is a lot of work and a nice treat that I know isn’t gross is a great reward once in a while.
I photograph candy too. Trust me after I photograph candy you don’t want to eat it. My sweaty hands have been all over it and it’s pretty gross.
There are lots of people that help this site out a whole lot. People that give their time for nothing to make things run smoothly. Sometimes it’s moral support; sometimes it’s actual work. Well these people are often first on my list to give something sweet to. If you’re wondering how you can get on board just let me know you want to help and maybe I might send you something.
Well that’s pretty much it, I think. So this is why I don’t really have much candy to give away. I hope you don’t think I’m a jerk.

Easter update day!

I figured I’d end this week’s review-a-thon with what I found to be the silliest Easter treat I could find. I love it when candy companies combine so many ideas into one. It’s as if someone made a list of things that kids liked about candy and someone else just made it without thinking the whole treat through.

Happy Easter

Here’s hoping you find all of that chocolate today, even the stuff under the vent that no longer looks like a bunny but instead is just a puddle of melted chocolate.

It’s kind of late… again for update day.

Easter is coming, and it’s coming quick. It’s not that I’m just super excited about a bunny coming to my house and leaving candy, I’m also looking forward to all the sales afterwards. Discounted chocolate is one of the finer things in life. Maybe you might even find a few of today’s review after Easter.

Tomorrow is National Licorice Day!

I figure with update day, Easter and all that happening tomorrow I’d give the fine folks that want to celebrate National Licorice day a little warning. Maybe instead we could say that it’s National Licorice Weekend or something, although that might conflict with the whole religious thing.

What an update day I’ve had.

Today I ate some of the freshest cheese I’ve ever eaten in my life. So fresh that I watched them clean the machine that they made it with. I highly recommend if you ever have the means to try some really fresh cheese yourself. So what does fresh cheese have to do with today’s Easter treat review? Well if I wasn’t out eating fresh cheese I would have had the update up sooner.
