Candy News

Best innovation this year in the snack world, Popcorn Chips, second best Finger Pup-pets?

This might be the best candy headline of the month "Novelty, Innovation Key To U.S. Gummi Market".

Last week I posted an article about the difference between natural and dutch processed cocoa powder, today you can find out how to pick the tastiest cocoa powder.

Nothing says true love like eating the severed head of your betrothed.

At first I thought Cadbury was just getting more extreme, but as it turns out the wasp that might have been found in one of its bars was a mistake.

I'm not sure if this chocolate toothpaste is a real thing, or more importantly, if it's a good idea.

I think this advertisement deserves the award for "the most unlikely to be actually shot on a ski hill".  While little clues like the cheesy background, and the strange way the snow is sticking to them, is a bit of a give-away.  I think the most convincing thing that tells me that they're not really on a ski hill is their form.  I haven't gone skiing in a few years, but I'm pretty sure I didn't look like this.  I find it pretty amazing that an art director at an advertising agency actually took this picture and said "this is what I believe represents winter".

A Cool Candy Thing

I have mixed feelings about Play-Doh food themed play sets.  I think that they're really fun to play with, and I've spent hours enjoying myself doing just that.  The problem I have with them is the temptation to bite into anything that I make.  Play-Doh smells so good, and when you make it up to look like yummy food, it's just too hard to resist.  Unfortunately Play-Doh doesn't taste as good as it looks or smells.

This Week In Candy

Valentine's Day is approaching, isn't it?

I got an e-mail from the fine folks at Candy Kid Candy and they wanted to know if I wanted to get a free sample of one of their candy boxes.  As you know from reading any part of this site, free candy is pretty much one of the greatest things in my life, and these candy boxes look like they're going to be pretty cool.  It seems to work as either a one off buy, or a subscription service, depending on how many boxes you order.  In any case, you basically seem to get a box of random candy every month to enjoy, which is a great thing for those of us with a broad taste in candy.  So they've agreed to send me a box to try out, which I'll write about when I get it, but they've also agreed to give all of you 10% off if you decide to order one for yourself.  Just go to their site, order a box (or two), and enter the discount code "CRITIC10" (make sure to order soon as the deal closes on February 1st).  This is a great new idea, and they're sending out their first boxes in February, so if you order a box, let me know how it goes.

Also, last week I got peanut butter on my mind, since it was National Peanut Butter Day.  Allison is a huge peanut butter fan, so she was happy to celebrate as best she could.  But we got into a conversation, and a question came up, "are the crunchy bits in crunchy peanut butter added, or part of the peanut grinding process?".  I sent out a general request for an answer and in no time Mr. Peanut Butter (@pbj06) gave me an answer.  According to him, most of the time the crunchy peanut bits are actually added to the peanut butter to make it crunchy.  Apparently only the finer "boutique" style peanut butters will actually be crunchy through the grinding process.

Cold Themed Review For My Friends In North America

I'm not sure if posting a review themed on the cold is cruel for my friend having a tough time of it in North America right now.  The intent is not to mock you, the intent is to acknowledge the fact that it's cold where you are.  While I can't share this cold feeling seeing as I'm in the Mediterranean right now, I do really miss it.  I'm sure I wouldn't miss it after a few months of it, but for now I simply pine for a cold winter's morning.  While I'm at it, I'll enjoy one of the treats from today's review, maybe that will help get me into the winter spirit.

Candy News

For all of you bakers out there, I have three words for you "Sweet Potato Caramel".

So the folks at Haribo designed some candies that aren't really politically correct, so now they're saying sorry.

What better way to say I love you than candy, because apparently people would rather have that then a handful of dying flowers.

According to the Specialty Food Association, everybody is looking to blow out their taste buds with extreme flavors.

The words decadent and chocolate are used a lot together, I think this is a good thing.

Did you know the difference between Dutch Process and Natural cocoa?  Did you even know that there was a difference?

I never thought that one could even make Cotton Candy by hand (without a machine) but I've been proven wrong.

First Cadbury purple is trademarked, now it appears that the shape of a Kit Kat might be trademarked too.

Speaking of Kit Kat, apparently there's a Kit Kat store in Tokyo that just opened... change my travel plans.

First they tell us that chocolate prices are going up, then they tell us to eat more white chocolate, now they're saying that chocolate prices are going back down... I'm so confused.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

In the last 10 years or so, I've noticed an increase in the use of sex to sell mints.  I'm not prude, but I don't understand the connection between sex and mints.  Sure I've heard stories about what people do with mints, but is that really the image that candy companies want?  I don't mind candy companies marketing towards adults, and I don't even mind using sex to sell things, but I think it has to work with the product.  I guess I just don't find mints to be sexy.

A Cool Candy Thing

Yesterday I wrote about the Tic Tac Syndrome, an issue where you can't help but shove your mouth full of a particular candy.  While I think candy dispensers can help this problem, I worry about how hard they can be to load up.  This particular dispenser looks pretty cool, but it also looks like it might be hard for a sufferer of the Tic Tac Syndrome to fill up.  So if you have a problem, and you want this PEZ dispenser, make sure to get plenty of extra PEZ so you can munch while you fill it up.

Tic Tac Syndrome

Tic Tac Syndrome is what I call it when you can't eat just one of a particular type of candy.  Actually it's a little more serious than that, the Tic Tac Syndrome is what happens when you can't help but dump an entire package of candy in your mouth all at once.  The name comes from the candy (Tic Tac) that consists of a package of small mints that are simply unsatisfying to eat individually.

While Tic Tac’s are the best example of a candy you can't eat slowly, there are many others.  Pixie Sticks, (Canadian and UK) Smarties, and Chiclets gum, are a few other examples of candies that cause people to down an entire package in one go.  These treats just have a certain flavour and texture that is satisfying when it fills up your mouth.

While I believe that I suffer from this syndrome in a fairly bad way, I'm not the only one.  I've spoken to many candy fanatics all over the world that have had problems with the Tic Tac Syndrome.  These people have told me tails of stuffing their faces with all kinds of bite-sized treats.  Some are proud of how many of a particular treats they can shove in their mouths; while others are ashamed at how quickly they go through an entire package of candy.
For those that want to defeat the Tic Tac Syndrome, it can be a great challenge.  The best way to regulate the problem is with novelty candy dispenser, such as a PEZ dispenser.  These can slow down your face stuffing habits, but they're not perfect.  First of all, most of these dispensers are cumbersome to fill.  There's also nothing to stop you from just emptying the entire contents of these dispensers into your hand and simply eating all the candy in one gulp.

The only other cure I've heard of is an unplanned accident.  Say for example your tasting a new mint, and each mint is made up of a tiny mouth pleasing little round ball.  Many people suffering from the Tic Tac Syndrome would have a hard time just eating one or two.  Now if these mints were super-powerful, or spicy, this would leave you in a great deal of discomfort.  Having this happen enough times, or having a serious enough trauma, might kick you of the habit.  But it doesn't always work, and I'm proof of that.

This Week In Candy

Last week I wrote a review, this review is not going to be posted on candycritic.org for about 9 months, I wrote my Halloween review.  It just happened to be one of those situations where I was given a treat that fits the Halloween theme, so I wanted to take advantage.  Strangely enough, a few days after writing this review, I went out shopping and came across a great Christmas candy that was on sale.  I bought it, and that means I'll be writing my Christmas review later this week as well.

This morning I mentioned that Candy Critic now has 861 candy reviews online.  It's not a particularly celebratory number, but we're pretty proud that the number went so high.

Later this week I'll be posting a piece I wrote on something I call the "Tic Tac syndrome".  I think this is something that many people can relate to, so make sure to check back later.  I'm also working on a few secret projects that I hope to be able to announce in the future.

Today I Post My 861st Review

One of the things that I always mean to keep track of, but almost never do, is how many reviews I've posted.  I've been doing this site for some time now, and when it started I had no kind of regular schedule for posting reviews.  I also occasionally do review-a-thons, and other special review days, so unfortunately it's almost impossible to figure out how long the site has been up based on the number of reviews, or vise-versa.  But just knowing that I've tasted more than 800 different candies, and written about them, is a pretty big deal to me.  It got me thinking, I wonder what my 1000th review will be, and I wonder if I'll even know that it's happening.

Candy News

People tell me that sweets are just a fun distraction, that they don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things, I would like to inform said people that you are wrong.

So, what does sugar do to your brain?  Well it's not all good, but it doesn't mean you have to stop eating candy either.

Fashion that knows when you're eating chocolate, why was this invented before that jacket that knows that it's raining?

You know the only thing that bugs me more than a bad pun?  Food with bugs in it, it's all novelty, and less focus on quality.

More news about white chocolate becoming more trendy.  My guess is that it's a ploy to get us to eat less cocoa and keep candy reasonably priced.

Do you also get sad when you come across lists on the internet of retro candy?  Does it make you sad to know you'll never eat them again?

It appears that sour and spicy are gaining more ground in candy popularity.

Ladies, how do you feel about chocolate?  Do you love it?  I mean, do you really love it?

Have you heard of this thing called a "dessert salad"?  Those that might be confused about it being a real salad should also learn a little something about ice cream soup.

3D chocolate printers... What would be the first thing you would make out of chocolate?

Hershey's VS Nutella, who's going to win the epic battle of chocolate spreads in the USA?

I've always thought the the new generation of Jelly Bellies could spark some awesome recipes, and I was right.

Sometimes language can make candy hilarious.

Making chocolate is not a simple task, it takes a great deal of knowledge, and almost all of that knowledge is in science.  Many people say that baking is like chemistry, and you have to get everything right, but when compared to chocolate, baking is like making a soup.  All you need in baking is a few of the right ingredients at a fairly regular proportions, with chocolate everything must be perfect.

Orville You Amaze Me

A few months ago I made a special order of fun treats from home.  Every once in a while I crave some treats and foods that I can only get in Canada, things like Shreddies and Kraft Dinner just remind me of home and make me feel warm inside.  One of the things I ordered on this round was microwave popcorn.  Now you may be wondering why I would have microwave popcorn from so far away when you can pretty much buy the stuff all over the world.  This first reason is Mr Redenbacher, that man makes some mean popcorn.  It puffs up nicely, leaves very few un-popped kernels, and the fake butter flavour is stupendous.
The other reason I placed this order was to try out their new microwave bowl technology.  Orville Redenbacher found a way to change their microwave bag into a bowl.  I have to admit that I was skeptical of this, and I figured I would just end up with the same floppy bag that I always get, only it would have an opening on the side.  As it turns out it not only works, it brings more entertainment to the popcorn popping experience.  While the bag is popping both sides of the bag are made from a red transparent plastic.  That means that for the first time ever, you can watch your microwave popcorn pop.  It seems like a trivial thing, but I assure you that if you buy this you'll watch at least one bag pop.
As far as the bowl itself, it was really easy to open up.  You still have to be careful of the steam, and if you're like me you'll burn yourself at least once because you'll rush trying to open it.  The only fault I found with this design is that the red plastic doesn't seem to come off as easily as they say it would in the instructions.  I find that I have to work one end till I get to the middle, then I have to start on the other end. The instructions imply that it comes off in one easy tug.  This is only a problem because this is also the time you're most likely to get a steam burn.
Once the plastic is off, the bowl works perfectly.  I enjoyed a few bags of this wonderful treat watching movies at my house and the bowl sat nicely on my lap and on the table.  As always the popcorn popped very well, and the butter flavour was very well distributed.  I think that this might be the next great step in microwave popcorn technology.

Beware the popcorn army.  I'm never going to be able to eat another bowl of popcorn without imagining that they're little popcorn men thrown together in a giant bowl.  I'll walk them to their doom, and throw them in my mouth like Jabba the Hut throwing rebel scum into the Sarlacc Pit.

I can't decide if popcorn is one of the most beautiful, or ugliest snacks in the world.  Each fluffy white piece is created by an explosion, so that's a little violent, but you're left with a soft white puff of goodness.  I wonder if there are ways to design popcorn that pops in a certain way.  I've never seen two kernels that look exactly the same, but I imagine science might have a way to do this.  I guess popcorn may not be the most attractive snack in the world, but it's probably not the ugliest either.  I think we can all agree that when you think about it, popcorn is one of the most fascinating treats.

This Week In Candy

This week is going to be about popcorn.  I wanted to write about what I consider to be the latest and greatest popcorn innovation since the microwave bag. So that article will be going up later this week, the future of popcorn is here my friends.  I also wanted to show off my latest 8-bit t-shirt design, as you can imagine it's popcorn themed.  Finally I wanted an excuse to eat a lot of popcorn this week, so enjoy popcorn week here on the Candy Critic blog.

If you're not following us on Instagram, this might be a good excuse.  We've just started a new segment on our Instagram account called our daily Snack Fact.  Every day we'll post a new fact about the snacks we love to eat.  We'll look at the history, science, and general trivia about all the junk food we love to eat.

On a technical side, we've been messing with our various feeds lately trying to make sure there is no doubling up or missing links.  This is a process that takes some time, and we're still working out the bugs.  Hopefully we'll have it all working perfectly very soon, but we appreciate your patience as we're working it out.  On a side note, any tips you might have on this subject are greatly appreciated as well.

A Chocolate Bar Even Tinkerbell Could Love

I can't imagine how the bar from this week's review got the name, Pixie. There's nothing fairy like or whimsical about it at all, but that's the fun thing about candy.  You can name a candy bar just about anything you want, and it's pretty much accepted.  Sure, sometimes it's nice for the name of the treat to have an association with the bar, like Caramilk, or Big Turk, but it's not necessary.  Sometimes a bar can simply just have a fun name that has nothing to do with what you're about to eat.  Sometimes bars have names that are just complete nonsense and that's OK too.  This is one of the great fun things about candy.

Two things about this commercial.   First of all, it's interesting to see a commercial that sells a chocolate bar as an important part of a daily diet.  I don't disagree with this, as any marathon runner will agree a little sugar and carbs can give you a good boost, it's just not for those of us that sit in front of a computer all day.  The second thing about this commercial is how manly it is. I read somewhere that the colour orange comes from the fruit.  In other words, before oranges where called "oranges", the colour orange didn't exist.  Instead most people referred to orange as a shade of red.  So if you built a time machine and wore this t-shirt back thousands of years, you'd actually be wearing a red gummy bear t-shirt, and not an orange one.

Cool Candy Thing

Most people don't really understand how much science goes into candy.  One of the biggest errors people can make when making candy at home is to assume that you can go nuts without thinking.  It's not that you can't be creative when you make candy, you just have to understand where to be creative, and how to be creative.  The only way to know this is to understand the science of what you're doing.  Fortunately for you, there seems to be science kits designed to teach you just that.
